24V Brushless Motor with Brake: Holding Loads Without Idle Current
A 24V brushless motor with brake can hold a load without using motor current to generate continuous torque, which is useful when a mechanism must remain stationary after motion stops. The brake is not a substitute for sizing the motor, drive, or mechanical support, and its behavior depends on how it is wired and controlled. Selection should start by defining the holding condition and the consequences of a power interruption.
Understand the brake's role
Many compact motor brakes are spring-applied and electrically released: power energizes a coil to release the brake, while removing coil power allows it to engage. This arrangement can provide holding when the motor supply is off, but exact behavior must be confirmed from the brake specification and wiring diagram. A brake may not be intended for frequent dynamic stopping, especially if it is primarily rated for static holding.
Determine whether the brake is expected to stop a moving load or only prevent motion once it has already stopped. Dynamic braking can produce heat and wear, and the allowable energy and cycle rate may be limited. The machine's safety analysis should decide whether an independent mechanical restraint or other protective measure is necessary.
Check holding torque at the load
Calculate the torque needed to resist gravity, process forces, and any disturbance at the motor or output shaft. If gearing is used, account for ratio and efficiency, but do not assume that a gearbox is self-locking. Apply an appropriate engineering margin for load variation and wear, following the equipment and brake specifications. Confirm that the brake's rated holding torque is stated at the relevant shaft and operating conditions.
For a vertical axis, consider what happens during a sudden loss of power, a controller fault, and planned shutdown. The brake may engage after a delay, and the moving assembly may travel before it does. If the machine uses a gearbox, coupling, or belt, those components must also tolerate the holding torque without slip or damage.
Integrate the 24V electrical system
The motor's 24V rating does not automatically define the brake coil voltage. Verify the brake's separate voltage and current requirements, release current, suppression method, and duty rating. Size the power supply and wiring for both the motor and brake, including voltage drop during acceleration. The controller's brake output must support the coil load or operate an appropriately rated relay or driver.
Coordinate brake timing with motor torque. A typical sequence establishes motor torque before releasing the brake, then applies the brake after the axis has stopped and torque is controlled. The precise sequence should follow the motor and drive documentation. Test the behavior during startup, stopping, emergency conditions, and power cycling to detect a drop or unintended motion.
Validate in the complete mechanism
Inspect mounting, shaft fit, thermal conditions, and access for service. Measure holding behavior under the actual payload, and verify that the brake releases consistently at the lowest expected supply voltage. Document inspection intervals and replacement criteria, particularly when the brake performs repeated stops.
Teams specifying 24V brushless motor configurations with brakes should provide load inertia, axis orientation, required holding time, stop frequency, and the 24V supply limits. That lets the motor, brake, and controller be evaluated as a coordinated system rather than treating the brake as a simple add-on.
